Bonvivant- a review

One of the best things about being a food blogger is being invited to a restaurant to try their new menu. i was more than delighted to give it a try.
we went to this place called Bonvivant at law garden… right in the middle of a busy bustling place. its often closed down for vehicles in the evenings and mornings. one has to walk around and shop from the streets, catch a play at the auditorium or go hog at multiple options!

Bonvivant

Bonvivant

Bonvivant

i found the place neat and hygienic. i loved the lights and the seating didnt hurt (it didnt have cushioning.. but was still comfy).
i liked the fact that loners or non-talkers can always watch some tv while waiting for the order.
overall… i liked the interiors and cleanliness.
i began my order with some corn tomato soup (sans cheese) and harra bhara kebabs.

reivew

i have never tasted such a tomato soup. it had more of sugar than the actual tomato!!! and soups aren’t meant to be sweet as mithai 🙁
and the corn was hard and chewy!!! it was truely disappointing, left it mid way to try the kebab.

=”review”

sorry the the intruding hand… PG has this rare habit of spoiling all my pics and i really don’t mind it ! and he also loves to eat with his hand… he says that’s how a gujju eats! true 🙂
the kebabs were not so bad.. the chutney was good.. however 2 hours later i had swings of kebab burps… and that disturbed me. i wasn’t sure whether it was the kebab or the soup working uphill!

though i was not much happy with my dinner i dogged into a subway sofa and ordered something originally sweet…

reivew
even when i didn’t enjoy the food, law garden has some exciting stuff to see, specially if you are with your family!

Bonvivant

my verdict- i started with the soup n starter.. did not go to main course menu, jumped to the dessert at another place… so yes- its a one time go and if you are a person who likes every cuisine made the gujju-way u shall def. like the place n food as well. i would pass it off.

cheers!

The Okra Show

Hahahaaa… the other day a friend at P101 told me how she began learning kitchen rules and cooking after her wedding date was fixed. she thought she knew it all until on the 3rd day after wedding she was asked to cook bhindi aka okra aka ladies finger. she chopped ’em into pieces and dumped them in a pressure cooker with water and spices! whooopss!! it surely is something you will laugh at a lot in future. but for now it was such a gigantic mistake!!
she isnt the only one who told me about such a blunder. a few other friends also tried cooking bhindi the similar way. freak! how can you even think of it??

well, i in that matter didnt make that mistake. (doesnt mean i never made a cooking blunder… remember this?? )
but for now, i make perfect gujju bhindi sabzi and i hereby declare the recipe open to use. just mention my name/blog url in case u are referring it to others. feels nice when ppl appreciate it u see.

Okra
i diced the bhindi and added a medium sized potato (i thought the quantity wasn’t just enough… cooking intuition )

add 5 tsps of vegetable oil in a kadhai or a deep cooking vessel and let it heat at a medium flame. once its evenly heated.. add 2 huge spoons of garlic paste *optional* (garlic petals smashed into paste with salt and red chili powder), saute it for a few seconds.
next- add the bhindi (and potato) into the vessel and mix well, put a lid over the container and let the lid be a little deep (i use a thali / dish as a lid) so that you can pour in half a glass of water over the lid. that means no water inside the vessel but over the lid. let it cook for a minute.

next- drag the lid carefully aside. the water filled lid still needs to used. add in the spices – chili powder, coriander-jeera powder, and salt. use it as per the taste you or your family likes. gujju food is normally very spicy. you may prefer to vary according to your taste buds.
mix it well and notice it getting sticky. put on the lid again… if the water has evaporated, fill it again.
let it cook for 7 mins. (varies according to quantity,… plz keep on checking it)
Okra
once cooked, garnish it with coriander (i dont do with mine… )
serve it with chappati or parantha.

things to take care of :
1. do not dice the veggies very thin… these are not french fries.. if tastes better if kept bigger.
2. be careful with the chili powder in case you are adding garlic paste. you dont want the burning sensation later.
3. heat it again in case it still feels sticky.
4. do NOT add water in the vessel.
5. do NOT cook it at high flame. low to medium is just perfect.
6. let the bhindi cook a little in oil/garlic paste before adding the spices. let the oil seep in for a better taste.
7. do NOT overdo the quantity of oil… you dont want others to typecast gujju recipe as oily and unhealthy. its NOT^^

lemme know if you tried it… lemme know if you have a yummy okra recipe too.
would love to read or share with my readers.

cheers!

post honey singh evening

Guess who we met last evening?

honey

it certainly has been a while since Ganu last

honey

people gave him money and he let them touch him, i touched his trunk… so strong n rough! it sure was a cute experience though…

singh

we were at a Honey Singh concert that turned out to be a flop show!! i pity those who paid a huge amount for the passes which was tuned off within 20 mins of its beginning!
anyways, it was still nice catching up with a few of PG’s friends and hogging on these mini wheels of dough veggies and cheeeeeese

post

and a mid night snack!!!
i am not surprised at myself to have started mid night snacks since past whole week 🙂

evening
this sweet fellow is often called as buddha fruit or sharifa! and many other names in different places. mo matter what it’s name… it manages to satisfy the human hunger and the happiness quotient !
and …. that’s what really matters, right? oh yes !!

what are your fav mid night snacks?

cheers!

band-aids to disaster cooking!

So last night i was so excited to cook a cheesecake. i found the recipe on a cooking blog !!! (hell, i am never gonna do this to my readers)

i took pictures of all the ingredients and mixes and stages so i could paste it here and share with you but it was a massive disaster!!

band

the crust came out in crumbles and it didnt taste like a cheese cake at all. 🙁
i cried in frustration… well, i was sad the rest of the day!

band
and today morning the bright juicy breakfast sweet lime gave me a signal something good was to happen –
band
tada! a teeny parcel arrived in the mail with a sample to try on.. i have always loved testing samples of products i plan to buy ahead in future! this helps me plan a budget and also whether to spend on the product or is it really worthless! this time its the Acuvue contact lens.
disaster
something more wonderful happened in the later  part of the day.
Rita had planned some goodies for us. plus …

…and Parmita (oh what a swweeet girl ) got us this ! yay!
disaster
one more Dungeedums apple pie to hog on! what does one do when they see this shining yummy baked baby ?

disaster

dump the fork, screw the spoon, i have my fingers dug right into the huge chunk without weighing its calorie content! (calorie?? whats that?)
disaster
wowww! truely deliccious. this is my second try on dangeedums product. will have to visit this store soonish!
as of now, i m going to keep the rest of the day fruitilicious and simple.
the disaster that happened last night has been covered in such a pretty delicious way.

do u have a better and simple (already experimented on) cheesecake recipe?

Craving Mexican- a review

Had been craving for some red beans n salsa sauce since Saturday…
but PG n I vowed we would only eat out once a week and mostly that is Sunday evening.
so i asked for restaurant suggestions on Facebook on Saturday evening and reached ‘Just Mexican’ on Sunday evening.

 Craving

we found the seating soon and definitely there was a queue for ordering and a long wait before the order arrived.

Craving
waiting wasn’t boring as we had pretty people around, tv tuned to VH1, nice music and lots of talks to share. plus an interesting menu to look at.
Craving

lots to order from- tacos, nachos, rice plates, burritos, quesadilla, wraps and extras.

Mexican
the self service counter is a good way to save some waiter clutter on the already small aisle of the restaurant. i appreciated it.
10 minutes later the food arrived. 🙂

Mexican
the quality did match my high expectations, but the quantity did not. i ordered bean tacos and did not expect only one taco shell 🙁
PG ordered chili n cheese quesadilla which looked thin like a fashion week ramp model . no doubt they both tasted excellent but we didn’t expect such a small quantity… we never hog during dinner but this still wasn’t sufficient.
they had lots of varieties for soft drinks too (including the new starbucks coffee bottles- a new trend among ahmedabad restaurants).
totally loved the food!! i was craving for Mexican and my taste buds gave it full marks 🙂 yay!

things that disappointed me –
i was not happy with the quantity they served. specially not when u are left hungry and u gotta wait 10 more minutes for another tacos to arrive.
they did not have  a soft drinks menu/rate on the card.
carlos did not serve me 🙁 the food was mexican but no mexican flavor in the atmosphere once you enter the restaurant.
no sweet side kicks! i am sure mexican cuisine too has some ice cream o sweet flavors to it. and i am still unaware of the what they eat! they cant live on only cheese and chili fo-sure!!

i would definitely go back once more for the lovely taste it serves… maybe not on sunday evenings and rush hours.

are sunday dinners complete without a sweetdish?? def. not !!!
we drove across the road to meet mr muffin at ccd.

Mexican
i have always loved their hot split muffin with chocolate sauce and the fragrance it oozes in my nostrils… incomparable !

the puppies were asleep when i reached home, but it was sweet to see these twins curl up in a heart shape…
a review
a late night snack before the beautiful sunday bids a good night and a tyrant monday begins… btw, sweet melons are very juicy and healthy for body! lots of vitamins and fibre.

and the monday morning has been crazyyyy…
wish mondays would just skip and never trouble me again .

any mexican recipe u can share with me?? have been in love with it lately…

cheers!

indulges

Spend the beginning of this week at my parent’s place. there’s nothing more wonderful than spending time with mum dad and the most cutest nephew in the world! i can give up anything to see him smile 🙂

before i left on Sunday evening… my Sunday morning began with making coriander Khichu payal style but it didnt really look or taste the same…

indulges

and i indulged on a pop-sickle candy to make up for the amazing taste i was craving at the navratri festival that evening… no! i wasnt allowed to play this year (health issues) , i simply watched, ate and enjoyed 🙂

indulges
the most wonderful three days of fun and comfort followed after that evening, a short visit to my parents place…
and the things i poked my teeth into-
vegetable hakka noodles- indian style !  the way i demanded it.
thanks to my closest girl friend VT. i had requested her to make these splly for me.
indulges

they were piping hot and i had two plate-full of it… craving to have more of it the next time i am there…

indulges

a tall glass of what i would call as… fererro rocher sin! a ferrero thick shake at 2am in the night with my love- PG.

and the most awaited thing : mango pulp! awwwww…. this tastes so yummy even after season.

the trip was over even before i could fully enjoy it.
by the way, guess who greeted me in the parking area when we were back?

yay! three of them.. cute puppies for everyone in the building to play with. hahah…

so how was ur week? what all marvelous things u ate/drank?

cheers!

the Burrp ! Brunch

It was a beautiful morning today, i was up and ready a little early than usual , had my daily dose of almonds with milk and a quick rush to the friday exercise class at P101. little did i know i would be greeted with food (read starry eyes and watering mouth) by payal and vijayeta…
oh my!
all the exercise and calorie-output got squashed by my love for food!

Brunch

shaily and vijayeta were the first ones to help themselves…

Brunch

mwaah to Payal Shah who once again created the same khichu magic she did the last time here. this time i got the recipe too 🙂

Brunch

who can resist those cute idlis (as shruti calls them); the chutney and sambhar were irresistible too… wish they were piping hot as well… but hell! who needs steamy food when we have hot ladies around!

Burrp

as we all indulged in idli-sambhar-chutney and ‘world famous’ khichu (as Rita calls it) i kept an eye on what Vijayeta had brought for us.
Dangeedums is a pastry shoppe i had heard about, never tasted its delicacies since its not near to my place… the good thing- my friend here (in the pic) got it for me 🙂

Burrp

Burrp

don’t these babies look like they need to be eaten away right NOW???
killer look!

with due respect to the exercise i just had… i had only half of it… though i could not resist and had two spoons of the other half resting in the left corner later. (punch me on the face for all those calories!!)

the

by the time i cleaned my bowl of every delicately baked morsel.. i went burrpp… it was full house inside my tummy.. no space for lunch so i kept it simple. (a small) coconut water… wish it was chilled :/

the

and my gooseberry (replacement for vitamin C) with some iron and calcium’s before i left for work.

the

what awaited me at the workplace??

a huge juicy gulab jamun with cardamom seeds and lots of sugary syrup oozing out! a colleague got it for me… could not say ‘no’ to her.

what a day it has been… the rest of the evening has been planned to be calorie free… only IF that happens… fingers crossed… i am too stuffed for anything today.. munching on one more gooseberry while i write this post.

what has been your greatest indulgence by now?

cheers!

5 steps to Pici Pasta

PG and i are big pasta fans. we can have it for breakfast or even a mid night supper. at times i feel the 2nd biggest reason we are still together is ‘love for food’ . he demands it any day and i always stock the ingredients.
this time i wanted to experiment with pici pasta after i saw lynn chen talk about it. definitely its nothing different than spaghetti in looks. and its super easy to make. if… u buy some outside help. like i did… and my pasta were ready in 5mins.

5 steps to Pici Pasta

1. boil the pasta in water (with a pinch of salt)

pasta

2. chop some veggies in the meanwhile, any you like. i added bellpeppers(green+red), tomatoes, and carrots.

pasta

3. in a non-stick pan~ 1.5 tablespoons of oil, and saute the veggies. let it simmer for 2 mins and add this ching’s noodle/rice schezwan masala.

pasta

4. add the pici pasta (drained out of the water)

pasta

5. mix well. let it get moist in the masala n veggies, add a pinch of more salt and serve hot.

Pici

guess who i rescued later in the night?? it was dying in a cold freezer and needed some warmth.

Pici

saving the poor kid wasnt a good idea… it wasnt my favorite flavor 🙁 this is one place where i and PG differ… he has always loved chocolate.

Pici

mocha brownie fudge – for me- doesnt taste as good as it sounds.

went to a spl place for burritos on sunday night! will talk about it in the next blog.
what do u add to ur home made pasta to make it delicious ?

cheers!
aavjo 🙂

DIRTY HARRY

when i saw this on my way back home,
DIRTY

i knew i needed to stop right there and have a taste test.

DIRTY
a guy from baroda has started this venture and i totally wanted to see what exactly it is all about. it was difficult to order since they all seemed so good and yummy…
HARRY

the chef was not so busy and i took his help to make a choice… with me craving for some minty flavor he suggested i try ‘dirty harry’ … haha was the new menu created after the vegas incident??? hahaha…

HARRY

he began his work on a cool icy plate and even let me click while he finely put up the ingredients together…
dirty

the mint-dark chocolate was a perfect combination, but this strawberry sauce was a big mistake. it made my live ice cream extremely sweet (and that’s what i didnt want!!)

dirty

though i did enjoy the final outcome with some gems dug inside it.
it felt like re-living childhood times 🙂

p.s please avoid PG’s hand… he just could not resist and the pot started melting very soon.
the place also has a DIY option, choose your own base and toppings:
these are the various things you can add, drizzle, sprinkle, garnish:

there are biscuits to rocher to caramel sauce to oreos and chocolates, white/chocolate drops, marshmallows(non-vegan), brownie and sponge cake…!!

lots to choose from, my take on ice cream on the rocks-
the quantity is too little for a rs.90 LIVE ice cream that comes to me almost melting and needs to consumed quickly.
loved the fancy-ness of the store and the concept.
liked the ‘many toppings’ to choose from.
like the neatness of the place and the live counter!
overall i would rate it a 7/10… had it not been melting i would have given it an 8 ! and a 9 if the price would be perfect!

its near Commerce 6 roads, navrangpura (ahm). visit it if you really wanna try the new concept and the variety you can get.

have a sweet little something tonight and miss me 🙂
cheers!
